Home Staging Tips – Tips for the Basement

Home Staging Tips 1 - Clean the stairs to the basement. Sweep the floor. To reduce odors, try leaving the windows open for a day. Be sure to remove any unsightly critter or pest traps when buyers come to view your home. If the basement floor is concrete, then consider painting it gray to create a clean look.

Home Staging Tips 2 - In a finished basement, help buyers envision a use for the space by adding props such as craft table or workout equipment. Add accessories such as plants, art and lamps to give the space warmth.

Home Staging Tips 3 - To add a romantic flare, light a few light-bulb candles in the room and you will have yourself a dinner for two, restaurant feel that will delight buyers.

Home Staging Tips 4 - Add lamps if the basement still appears dark. You can also brighten the space by painting the walls white, especially if the basement in unfinished. If you have paneled walls, then sand and paint them.

Home Staging Tips 5 - Repair issues, such as cracks, water damage or mold, could hinder the sale. Also, staging your unfinished or finished basement could add perceived living space, making your home seem larger.

Home Staging Tips 6 - Remove anything that is not essential and put it in a storage facility or get rid of it. If you must keep some items stored in the basement, then try to reduce the number of boxes by consolidating contents into fewer, larger boxes. This is also a good time to remove hazards and junk, such as solvents and lumber scraps.

Home Staging Tips 7 - Whether your basement is finished or unfinished you can delineate areas based on where different activities occur. For example, you could set up a kids play area, a sitting area, a hobby area and/or a workshop.

Home Staging Tips 8 - Try and choose flooring that is on par with the other flooring in the home. Carpeting in basement is always a plus. Choose a light color that will brighten the space.

Home Staging Tips 9 - If possible, add a green plant to the space. Treat the basement room just as any other room in the home and plants are always lending a good feeling to spaces.

Home Staging Tips 10 - A few well chosen accessories will reinforce the fact that this room is an integral part of the house, not an afterthought. The accessories need not be expensive. Choose items that are either similar in color, identical in shape or along the same theme.
